General Service Scope

The purpose of the bypass road and new entrance was to improve the safety & infrastructure of Gibbstown by allowing a route into the Port & Rail Terminal from I-295 without the need to travel through the town.

The scope of the project included installation of 4165 LF long steel sheet pile walls with 1’-8” reinforced concrete cap with pile lengths ranging from 15’ to 35’ long. R.E. Pierson was also required to excavate a 2.5 acre, 10’ deep pond with stone stabilized slopes. The project also included a security system with automatic gates, surveillance camaras, chain link fence, and monitoring buildings which satisfied the requirements of the US Coast Guard for a TWIC controlled port.

Project Challenge

The project required Installation of 35’ long sheet piles below a bridge with on 16’ of overhead clearance.

Project Solution

R.E. Pierson utilized creative solutions for excavation & temporary shoring of the existing ground as well as continuous movement monitoring of the adjacent structures. The sheet piles were spliced in the field using mechanical connections and welding.
