Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension MP A31.34 to MP A37.39

Project Owner(s)

Pennsylvania Turnpike Authority

Construction Value

$225 Million

Location

Montgomery County

Project Schedule

December 2017 – November 2021

General Service Scope

The six mile widening of the Turnpike project included staged construction with support of excavation walls, seven sound walls, five retaining walls, five culverts, three single span bridges, a three-span bridge, 60,000 linear feet of drainage, and two million cubic yards of excavation.

Project Challenge

Approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of excess fill was generated during construction. All excess was required to remain on Turnpike right of way. The project also included the construction of 32 basins to handle the runoff from the widened road. These basins included amended soils, various plantings, and drainage components.

Project Solution

Working with the Turnpike, Soils Conservation District, United States Corps of Engineers, and the Department of Environmental Protection, a permanent stockpile location was identified and the fill was placed in three large stockpiles. The basins were started and completed throughout the construction staging to meet the stringent regulations for runoff containment.
